Earlier today, Miloš and I went to the town of Krk on the island of Krk. It’s pretty close to where he lives, so it’s a perfect day trip for a nice afternoon by the sea.
The town itself is on the southwestern part of the island and has a beautiful old town – one of the oldest in the Adriatic. Here’s a link to a really interesting site about the history of the island: Krk Island
For reference, here is a map of Krk Island and the nearby mainland. (Milos’ hometown is Crikvenica.)
(You can see the town of Krk in the middle of the photo.)
History at a Glance:
The beginnings of the cathedral date back to the 5th century, and were built on the remains of old Roman baths. The Frankopan ruling family erected the town’s castle during the period from the 12th to 14th centuries. The first mention of the the old city walls go back to the first century B.C. and still remain around most of the city’s old town.
Wandering around town:
We truly enjoyed walking around the different parts of Krk – the marina, the old town, the sea side. The weather was gorgeous – bright and sunny, with temps in the upper 60s Fahrenheit. Great weather for mid-March. We had a drink at a seaside cafe and then wandered the narrow pedestrian streets of the old town. The stones of the narrow walkways reminded me of the streets of the old towns in Split and Zadar – worn down and shiny smooth under foot. The castle and fortress built against the sea made me think of something in a fantasy story.
We had an okay late lunch at the restaurant at the Marina Hotel. Since not many restaurants were open yet for the season, we decided to eat here, as we could sit on the terrace overlooking the marina. I’ll be honest – the view was the only thing that was great about this place. Food and service were just meh. I don’t recommend it.
After lunch, we wandered the old town some more and then walked along the coast beyond the city as the sun went down. It was a great day!
One thing that was of note – there were so many cats all around the old town – just doing their thing. And being super cute at the same time! (Can you tell that I’m missing my own cat?)
Here are some pics from our day!
Aaaand now for the kitties of Krk!
