July 2014 – Croatia photo highlights

Hi all! As promised, I’m putting together some photos from our time in Croatia earlier this month.  We spent time in Miloš’ hometown of Crikvenica, plus we headed down to Makarska again.  (Including a day trip to Brela, just north of Makarska.)  Hope you enjoy our photos!

(If you hover over each pic, you’ll see its description.  Click on a pic, and you’ll see the large full size version, with the option to page through all the pics in their full size.  Also, if you read this post from the actual post itself, and not the homepage, you’ll see my featured photo of Makarska at the top of the page.  And I DO encourage you to view it from the individual post perspective, as the photos are larger that way.)

Considering the number of reviews we’ve written on our dining experiences in Croatia, I thought it was about time that I posted a blog entry just on some of the dining options in Miloš’ hometown of Crikvenica.  (Remember how to say it?  “Tsreek-VEN-eet-sah.”)

Crikvenica is our home in Croatia.

Located along the northern coastal area of the country, about 25 minutes south of Rijeka, Crikvenica is a popular summer tourist area on the Adriatic, with beaches and beautiful coves stretching for miles.

This area of Croatia is well known for olive oils, truffles, cheese, and prosciutto.  Home cooking is alive and well, and that tradition is carried over into many of the area’s restaurants.

Many restaurants in Crikvenica are seasonal, and only some are open year-round.

A great place to stay in Makarska: Apartments Alagić

A great place to stay in Makarska: Apartments Alagić

For the second summer in a row, Miloš and I headed down the Croatian coast to Makarska, in the region of Dalmatia.  It’s about an hour south of Split, and is home to great beaches, hopping night life, and excellent restaurants.  We stayed again at Apartments Alagić, and couldn’t have been happier.  In fact, we were SO happy, that I wanted to intentionally write a little blog post just for the family that runs this place, in hopes it can help them get more happy guests!

Krk, Croatia

Earlier today, Miloš and I went to the town of Krk on the island of Krk.  It’s pretty close to where he lives, so it’s a perfect day trip for a nice afternoon by the sea.

The town itself is on the southwestern part of the island and has a beautiful old town – one of the oldest in the Adriatic.  Here’s a link to a really interesting site about the history of the island: Krk Island

For reference, here is a map of Krk Island and the nearby mainland.  (Milos’ hometown is Crikvenica.)

Day in and day out – here in Croatia

I know it’s been a little while since I posted.  But I have several posts in the works: a new Maškare post for 2014, more observations on cultural differences, and more insights on the process of being an American overseas.   For today, just some simple daily routine things.  Caroling season is over obviously, and … Read more

Where is Croatia?

I get asked this all the time when I go home to the States, so I thought I’d help people out with it!  As well as share some other helpful info about this great country.  😉 I must admit, when I first met Miloš almost two years ago, I too had to look Croatia up … Read more
